Fawaid Abi Ali al-Madaini (The Hadith Benefits of Abu Ali al-Madaini) is a hadith compilation transmitted by the traditionist Abu Ali Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Shuayb al-Madaini (d. after 311 AH / 923 CE), focusing predominantly on chains of transmission going back to Malik ibn Anas .
Transmission and Structure
The collection records texts transmitted by Abu Ali al-Madaini during his teaching sessions in Egypt, with explicit dating notes documented for transmissions in Shawwal 310 AH, 316 AH, and 319 AH . Al-Madaini received these narrations from several prominent scholars and traditionists in Egypt, including Yunus ibn Abd al-Ala, Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Wahb, Ibrahim ibn Marzuq, Malik ibn Abd Allah al-Tujibi, Bahr ibn Nasr al-Khawlani, Abu Umayya, Yazid ibn Sinan, Sa'd ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Hakam, al-Rabi ibn Sulayman, Bakkar ibn Qutayba, Miqdam ibn Dawud, and Yahya ibn Uthman .
The text opens with prefatory statements highlighting the scholarly stature of Malik ibn Anas and his Muwatta Malik:
- Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi affirming that he placed no one above Malik regarding the soundness of hadith, alongside his praise of Sufyan al-Thawri, Thabit, Shuba ibn al-Hajjaj, and Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak .
- Al-Layth ibn Sad supplicating for Malik in the Grand Mosque of Egypt due to the community's need for his legal rulings .
- Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafii declaring that no book on earth after the Book of God is more beneficial than Malik's al-Muwatta .
