Fawaid Abi al-Faraj al-Thaqafi (فوائد أبي الفرج الثقفي, "The Hadith Benefits of Abu al-Faraj al-Thaqafi") is a collection of hadith transmissions and selections (fawa'id) compiled from the narrations of the Persian hadith scholar and transmitter Abu al-Faraj Mas'ud ibn al-Hasan al-Thaqafi (462–562 AH / 1069–1167 CE) .
Author and Compilation
The work brings together narrations transmitted by Abu al-Faraj Mas'ud ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Qasim ibn al-Fadl al-Thaqafi, a prominent centenarian scholar and high-ranking authority (musnid) from Isfahan . Al-Thaqafi was born into a distinguished scholarly and notable family in 462 AH and died in Isfahan in Safar 562 AH at the age of one hundred .
The fawa'id drawn from his heard texts were extracted (khurrijat) into a multi-part collection spanning nine fascicles (ajza') along with elevated transmissions ('awali) . Related compilations of his narrations were also extracted by contemporary scholars, including his collection entitled 'Arus al-Ajza', which was extracted for him by the hadith master Abu Mansur ibn Ali al-Jarbathaqani .
Content and Transmission
The material in the collection consists of prophetic hadiths, narrations, and chains of transmission received by al-Thaqafi from prominent 5th-century AH scholars of Isfahan and neighboring regions. Among his key source authorities represented in his transmissions are his grandfather Abu Abd Allah al-Qasim ibn al-Fadl al-Thaqafi, Abu Amr Abd al-Wahhab ibn Mandah, Abu Isa Abd al-Rahman ibn Ziyad, al-Mutahhar ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Buzani, Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Simsar, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Tayyan, Sahl ibn Abd Allah al-Ghazi, Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Umar Tanah, Abu al-Khayr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rara, Sulayman ibn Ibrahim, and Ghanim ibn Abd al-Wahid .
Because al-Thaqafi outlived his peers and attained unique chains of transmission (tafarrada), his hadith parts were sought after by numerous students and scholars . Direct narrators from him included Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Amuli, Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Faraj al-Jubba'i, al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Jarbathaqani, Abd al-Awwal ibn Thabit al-Madini, the hadith master Abd al-Qadir al-Ruhawi, Muhammad ibn Makki al-Hanbali, Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Haddad, and Abu al-Wafa Mahmud ibn Ibrahim ibn Mandah . Those who transmitted from him through general certification (ijaza) included Abu al-Munajja Abd Allah ibn al-Latti, Karima bint Abd al-Wahhab al-Qurashiyya, her sister Safiyya, and Ajiba al-Baqadariyya .
