Fawaid Abi Abd Allah al-Farra (Arabic: فوائد أبي عبد الله الفراء, The Beneficial Narrations of Abu Abd Allah al-Farra) is a hadith compilation (juz' of fawa'id) by the Egyptian hadith transmitter and long-lived authority Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Nazif al-Farra (d. 431 AH / 1040 CE), recording selected prophetic hadiths and reports received from his direct teachers .
Content and Sources
The compilation consists of hadith narrations transmitted with full chains of transmission (isnad) from al-Farra's various teachers, many of whom dictated them to him in Egypt and Mecca . Fuat Sezgin noted that the material represents selections from the hadiths collected by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Abbas al-Mukhallis .
Among the teachers through whom al-Farra relates hadiths in this work are:
- Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zakariyya ibn Hayyuwayh al-Naysaburi
- Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Rafiçi
- Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi al-Mawt al-Makki
- Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Kharuf al-Madini
- Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ishaq ibn 'Utba al-Razi
- Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Nasr al-Basri al-Dhuhli, the Maliki judge of Egypt
- Abu al-Husayn Thawaba ibn Ahmad ibn Isa al-Mawsili
- Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Khadir al-Asyuti
- Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Ziyad, known as Ibn al-Haddad
The narrations cover diverse topics of Islamic law and ethics, including the minimum threshold for zakat, etiquette during the Friday sermon, manners of prayer, medical remedies, and the branches of faith .
Transmission and Manuscripts
The preserved transmission of the work traces back through a chain recorded in its opening: Abu Abd Allah al-Qasim ibn al-Fadl ibn Ahmad al-Thaqafi read the collection to al-Farra in Mecca within the Masjid al-Haram between Bab al-Nadwa and the Hujrah in Dhu al-Hijjah 412 AH . Later, the hadith scholar Abu Tahir al-Silafi received the text from al-Thaqafi by reading it to him at his residence in Isfahan during the month of Rajab in 488 AH .
Manuscript copies of the collection are preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (MS 3856/120), with photographic reproductions held in the Manuscript Library in Kuwait .
