Fath Rabb al-Bariyya fi Taysir Qiraat al-Alfiyya (The Opening of the Lord of Creation in Facilitating the Recitation of the Alfiyya) is a concise commentary on Nazm al-Durar fi Ilm al-Athar (popularly known as Alfiyyat al-Suyuti in Hadith terminology) by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE), prepared and edited by Sha'ban al-Awda (Abu Ubayda) .
Background and Purpose
Al-Suyuti composed his versification of Hadith terminology to encompass the contents of Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah while building upon the earlier didactic poem by Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi . Among the later commentaries written on al-Suyuti's poem was the two-volume work Is'af Dhawi al-Watar bi-Sharh Alfiyyat al-Athar by Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Adam al-Ityubi . Al-Awda produced Fath Rabb al-Bariyya as an abridgment of al-Ityubi's extensive commentary, aiming to extract the core explanations of the verses and present an accessible study aid for students seeking to memorize and understand the text .
Content and Method
The work begins with introductory biographies of both the poet, al-Suyuti, and the commentator, al-Ityubi, followed by a continuous presentation of the entire poem edited according to al-Ityubi's preferred readings alongside additional textual corrections . In the commentary, al-Awda restricts the exposition primarily to establishing the correct vocalization of the poetic lines, clarifying difficult vocabulary, and explaining the general meaning of each verse .
Al-Awda also highlights the additions (zawa'id) that al-Suyuti introduced over al-Iraqi's Alfiyya, placing bracketed comparative notations between the additions identified by Ahmad Shakir and those established by al-Ityubi . Where necessary, he supplements the work with verses whose attribution he verified, drawing their explanations from Muhammad Mahfuz al-Tarmasi's commentary Manhaj Dhawi al-Nazar, alongside selected observations from Ahmad Shakir .
