Fath al-Rahman bi Sharh Zubad Ibn Raslan ("The Opening of the All-Merciful in Commentating on Ibn Raslan's Zubad") is a classical Arabic commentary on Shafi'i jurisprudence authored by Shihab al-Din al-Ramli (d. 957 AH / 1550 CE) . The text expounds upon Safwat al-Zubad (also known as Matn al-Zubad), the famous versification of Shafi'i legal rulings composed by Ahmad ibn Raslan (d. 844 AH / 1440 CE) .
Composition and Content
Shihab al-Din al-Ramli completed the composition of Fath al-Rahman in the year 932 AH . The commentary opens with the author's praise: "Praise be to God who sent Muhammad as a mercy to all creation..." (al-Hamdu lillah alladhi ba'atha Muhammadan rahmatan lil-anam) .
The work serves as a comprehensive legal explanation of Ibn Raslan's verses, wherein al-Ramli incorporated the majority of his own juristic verifications (tahrirat) and preferred legal rulings (tarjihat) . The commentary gained immediate recognition during al-Ramli's lifetime, being transcribed by scholars and read aloud in his study circles .
Transmission and Related Works
Fath al-Rahman was subsequently abridged by the Yemeni Shafi'i scholar Ali ibn Muhammad al-Uqaybi al-Ansari (1033–1101 AH / 1624–1690 CE) in a work entitled Mukhtasar Fath al-Rahman 'ala Zubad Ibn Raslan . In addition, the author's son, Shams al-Din al-Ramli (d. 1004 AH / 1596 CE), authored his own commentary on the same didactic poem, titled Ghayat al-Bayan fi Sharh Zubad Ibn Raslan .
Multiple manuscript copies of Fath al-Rahman have survived across major archival collections, including Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya and the Al-Azhar University Library in Cairo, the Al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, the Gotha Research Library in Germany, Leiden University Library, and Dar al-Kutub al-Qatariyya in Doha .
