Fath al-Mughith bi Sharh Alfiyyat al-Hadith (Opening for the Rescuer: Commentary on the Thousand-Verse Poem of Hadith) is a comprehensive commentary on hadith terminology by the Shafi'i traditionist and historian al-Sakhawi (831–902 AH / 1428–1497 CE) . It explicates the didactic poem Alfiyyat al-Hadith (also known as al-Tabsira wa-l-Tadhkira) composed by Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi (d. 806 AH), which condensed Ibn al-Salah's Muqaddima with additions .
Background and Composition
The base text of the commentary is al-Iraqi's thousand-line poem summarizing the principles and classifications of hadith criticism . Al-Sakhawi completed writing his commentary on 11 Ramadan 882 AH . In the introduction to the work, al-Sakhawi stated that his aim was to clarify the obscure passages of the Alfiyya and unlock its intricacies .
Al-Sakhawi recorded the title of the book as Fath al-Mughith bi Sharh Alfiyyat al-Hadith in his biographical encyclopedia al-Daw' al-Lami' . A degree of confusion later occurred among some bibliographers—notably Hajji Khalifa in Kashf al-Zunun—who mistakenly assigned the title Fath al-Mughith to al-Iraqi's own intermediate commentary rather than to al-Sakhawi's work .
Method and Structure
Al-Sakhawi structured the book as an integrated or blended commentary (sharh mamzuj), directly weaving segments of the poetic verses into his explanatory prose rather than isolating each line above a separate commentary paragraph . Al-Sakhawi defended this stylistic choice against critics of blended verse commentaries, arguing that it brings out the intended meanings more completely and releases the concepts from the constraints of metrical rhyme .
Throughout the text, al-Sakhawi surveys both classical foundations and later developments in hadith terminology, cites divergent scholarly opinions, and provides critical analysis . When addressing points of dispute, he frequently quotes opposing viewpoints and responds to them, such as his rebuttal of Abu Sa'd al-Malini's sweeping dismissal of al-Hakim al-Naysaburi's al-Mustadrak while still noting al-Hakim's acknowledged leniency in authentication .
Reception and Editions
Fath al-Mughith is widely regarded by later scholars as the most extensive, detailed, and rigorously researched commentary on al-Iraqi's Alfiyya . Later authorities noted that no other single work in the discipline of hadith terminology matches its level of synthesis and verification .
The work was printed in several editions:
- Its first printing was produced in India at the Anwar al-Muhammadi press under the care of Muhammad Tegh Bahadur al-Lakhnawi in 1303 AH (1885–1886 CE) in a single large volume of five hundred pages .
- A three-volume edition was printed in Cairo at al-Matba'a al-Salafiyya, edited by Abd al-Rahman Muhammad Uthman .
- Academic critical editions were later prepared, including doctoral dissertations by Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr (1407 AH) and Muhammad Al Fuhayd (1408 AH) at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, and an edition edited by Ali Husayn Ali published in Banaras and later Riyadh .
