Fath al-Jalil fi al-Taliq ala Kitab al-Iklil

Fath al-Jalil fi al-Taliq ala Kitab al-Iklil (The Majestic Opening: A Commentary on the Book of the Crown) is a contemporary treatise on legal hermeneutics and the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) by Abd al-Rahman ibn Ali al-Hattab. The work serves as an analytical commentary on al-Iklil fi Istinbat al-Tanzil (The Crown on Deducing Rulings from the Revelation), the classical work on legal exegesis by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti.

Origins and Composition

The material for the book originated as a series of instructional lessons delivered by al-Hattab in a mosque in 1439 AH (2017–2018 CE). He decided to compile, edit, and refine the material after noticing that some papers containing his lesson notes were becoming torn and lost.

Scope and Content

Al-Hattab restricted his commentary in this work specifically to al-Suyuti's introduction and to Surat al-Baqarah. He commented on the introduction because al-Suyuti detailed within it the textual methods signifying legal rulings, considering them an essential prerequisite for legal deduction (istinbat). His decision to comment only on Surat al-Baqarah was guided by two considerations: the chapter encompasses foundational legal rulings, and he had already commented on the majority of the jurisprudential rulings from al-Iklil in his work Fath al-Allam fi Bayan Ma'akhidh al-Ahkam (his commentary on his own book Bulugh al-Maram min Ayat al-Ahkam).

Methodology and Sources

The commentary focuses primarily on the legal-theoretical foundations and justifications (al-ma'akhidh al-usuliyyah) underlying the derivation of rulings, which al-Hattab regarded as central to legal deduction yet underrepresented in contemporary scholarly discourse.

In establishing the text of al-Suyuti's work, the author relied on the critical edition edited by Amir ibn Ali al-Urabi. For referencing and evaluating prophetic traditions (hadiths), he drew upon the edition prepared by Mustafa al-Adawi. He intentionally refrained from documenting and authenticating the non-prophetic reports (athar) due to their large volume and because doing so lay outside the primary purpose of identifying usuli derivations.

Derivative Works

A portion of the commentary concerning the application of usuli principles to rulings extracted from Surat al-Baqarah was excerpted and rearranged by Hami Darami, a doctoral student in the Department of Usul al-Fiqh at the Islamic University. Al-Hattab subsequently integrated this extracted study into his work Dirasat Usuliyyah Tatbiqiyyah ala Ayat al-Ahkam (Applied Legal-Theoretical Studies on the Verses of Legal Rulings), after excluding the sections drawn from al-Suyuti's introduction.
