Fath al-Bari (in full Fath al-Bari bi-Sharh al-Bukhari) is an extensive commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari by the Hanbali jurist and traditionist Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (736–795 AH / 1336–1393 CE) .

Scope and Composition

Ibn Rajab began composing the commentary late in his life, but died before completing it . The text covers al-Bukhari's collection from its beginning up to the Book of Funerals (Kitab al-Jana'iz) .

In surviving manuscript copies available to editors, Ibn Rajab's original introduction and the commentary on the first seven hadiths of Sahih al-Bukhari are missing, with the surviving text commencing from the eighth hadith . Other manuscripts, such as copies preserved in Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya and the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, begin from the Book of Prayer (Kitab al-Salah) .

Method and Structure

Ibn Rajab follows a consistent structural and analytical method throughout the work:

  • Chapter analysis: He opens each chapter with its heading (tarjama), appending an extensive discussion of the legal issues raised by the heading and surveying scholars' opinions as a prefatory introduction .
  • Hadith text and isnad: Following the introductory commentary, he cites the hadith with its chain of transmission (isnad) and text (matn) as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari .
  • Takhrij and critical analysis: He engages in exhaustive extraction (takhrij) of the hadith's variant paths and narrations, addressing transmitter evaluation (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil), verifying continuous hearing (tasrih bi-l-sama') among narrators suspected of concealment (tadlis), and resolving apparent discontinuities in transmission .
  • Hadith defects ('ilal): He pays special attention to hidden defects in transmissions and differences among narrators, adhering to the methodology of early traditionists (al-mutaqaddimun) by relying on contextual indicators (qara'in) rather than rigid rules .
  • Legal derivation and early authorities: He expounds the legal rulings of the hadith in detail, discussing differing views, weighing evidence, and highlighting Hanbali positions . The work places primary emphasis on transmitting the interpretations and recorded statements of the early generations (al-salaf) rather than later jurists .

Reception

Scholars praised the depth of the portion Ibn Rajab completed. Ibn 'Abd al-Hadi remarked in al-Jawhar al-munaddad that the completed section up to Kitab al-Jana'iz was "one of the wonders of the age; had it been completed, it would have been among the marvels" . Ibn Muflih likewise commended the work, noting that Ibn Rajab incorporated substantial material from early authorities .

The title Fath al-Bari was later shared by the renowned commentary of Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani (773–852 AH), who composed his work independently in the generation following Ibn Rajab .
