Fatawa fi al-Tawhid (Fatwas on Monotheism) is a collection of theological rulings and answers authored by the Saudi scholar Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Jibrin (d. 1430 AH / 2009 CE), addressing foundational questions of Islamic creed (aqidah) and monotheism (tawhid) .

Background and Compilation

The work originated from a set of theological inquiries compiled by Hamad ibn Ibrahim al-Hurayqi and presented to Ibn Jibrin in 1412 AH . Ibn Jibrin authored his responses adhering to the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jama'ah as derived from the Quran, the Sunnah, the consensus of the early Muslim generations (salaf), and the teachings of his instructors from the scholars of the Najdi reform movement .

Al-Hurayqi initially received verbal permission from Ibn Jibrin to publish a comprehensive collection of his legal opinions; however, after a general compilation of the shaykh's fatwas was arranged and released by Ali Abu Lawz, al-Hurayqi chose to publish these particular responses in a standalone treatise dedicated solely to tawhid . Al-Hurayqi completed the editorial introduction for the publication in Jumada al-Ula 1416 AH in al-Quway'iyyah .

Structure and Content

The book is structured as a direct question-and-answer guide addressing matters of belief and devotional practice . Among the topics treated in the work are:

  • Healing with the Quran (al-tadawi bi-l-Qur'an): Discussing the conditions for Quranic incantations (ruqyah), the necessary faith and intention of both the reciter and the patient, and the application of specific verses of serenity and healing .
  • Eschatology and the Crossing over Hell (al-wurud): Clarifying the exegetical meanings of Quranic passage وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا ("There is not one of you but will pass over it"), evaluating interpretations cited by Ibn Kathir and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani regarding whether it signifies passing over the bridge (al-sirat) or entering without suffering harm .
  • Islam and Faith (Iman): Examining the distinction and overlap between the concepts of Islam (outward submission) and Iman (internalized conviction), citing the positions of scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali .
  • Reliance upon God (al-tawakkul): Defining the legal and spiritual reality of trusting in God, emphasizing that true reliance entails adopting practical means and pursuing livelihood rather than passive inactivity .
  • Rulings on Major Sins: Outlining the status and consequences associated with committing major sins (al-kaba'ir) .
