Faharis Ulum al-Quran al-Karim li-Makhtutat Dar al-Kutub al-Zahiriyya (Catalogues of the Sciences of the Noble Quran for the Manuscripts of the Zahiriyya Library) is a multi-volume descriptive catalogue compiled by Salah Muhammad al-Khaymi and published by the Academy of the Arabic Language in Damascus between 1403 and 1404 AH (1983–1984 CE) . The work systematically documents the Quranic codices, recitation manuals, general Quranic sciences, and exegetical manuscripts preserved in Dar al-Kutub al-Zahiriyya in Damascus .
Background and Purpose
An earlier catalogue of Quranic science manuscripts at al-Zahiriyya had been prepared by Izzah Hasan and published in 1963 CE . In the two decades that followed, that catalogue went out of print while the library acquired a significant number of additional Quranic codices, partial manuscripts (ajza'), and treatises on the Quranic sciences . Having completed the second volume of his catalogue on medicine and pharmacy manuscripts at the library, al-Khaymi undertook a comprehensive, updated inventory to encompass all of al-Zahiriyya's holdings in the discipline .
Structure and Scope
Although initially planned as a two-volume work, the author expanded it to three volumes because combining general Quranic sciences and Quranic exegesis (tafsir) into a single volume would have resulted in an excessively large book . The work is organized into three distinct volumes:
- Volume 1 (published in 1403 AH / 1983 CE): Covers complete and fragmentary Quranic codices (masahif), works on Quranic orthoepy (tajwid), and variant readings (qira'at) .
- Volume 2 (completed in Rajab 1404 AH / April 1984 CE): Encompasses treatises on general Quranic sciences .
- Volume 3 (completed in Ramadan 1404 AH / June 1984 CE): Dedicated entirely to manuscripts of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) .
Methodology
For each manuscript entry, the catalogue provides identifying data about the text and its author, alongside its general shelfmark number at al-Zahiriyya . Entries transcribe the opening lines (incipit) and concluding lines (explicit) of the manuscript . Codicological descriptions detail the physical characteristics of the copy, including paper type, script style, ink, page dimensions, ruling (mastara), line counts per page, folio count, copying date, and the scribe's name when recorded .
To aid researchers cross-referencing previous scholarship, al-Khaymi placed an asterisk (*) next to entries that had been listed in Izzah Hasan's 1963 catalogue . The author also appended bibliographical references at the conclusion of many entries, citing classical and modern biographical sources that mention the author or the work .
