Fadl Yawm Arafah (The Virtue of the Day of Arafah) is a short hadith monograph compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Bakr al-Warraq (293–378 AH / 906–988 CE) detailing prophetic traditions regarding the merits and devotional acts of the ninth day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
Content and Structure
The work is arranged as a single dictation session (majlis) comprising nine transmitted reports (ahadith), recorded with their full chains of transmission (asānīd). The author primarily relates these traditions through his father, Isma'il ibn al-Abbas al-Warraq, as well as scholars such as Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Abi Hashim al-Nahwi.
The booklet covers specific virtues and rituals connected to the Day of Arafah and the adjacent days of pilgrimage:
- Fasting: Traditions establishing the reward of fasting on the Day of Arafah as expiating sins for the previous and subsequent years, alongside traditions mentioning the fast of Ashura.
- Divine Grace at Arafat: Reports describing Allah expressing pride in the pilgrims before the angels on the evening of Arafah, as well as the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for the forgiveness of his community made at Arafat and Muzdalifah.
- Supplications and Takbir: Specific invocations of praise (tasbīḥ) recommended for the night of Arafah, and the prescription of reciting the takbīr starting from the morning prayer of Arafah through the afternoon prayer (ʿaṣr) of the final day of Tashriq.
- Sacrifice: The tradition outlining the religious merit of the sacrificial animals (al-aḍāḥī) as the established practice (sunnah) of Ibrahim.
Publication
The text was edited by Ammar ibn Sa'id Tamalt and published in a single volume alongside al-Tabarani's Fadl 'Ashr Dhi al-Hijjah by al-Dar al-Athariyyah in 1429 AH (2008 CE).
