Fadl al-Salat ala al-Nabi (The Virtue of Invoking Blessings upon the Prophet) is a hadith monograph by the Maliki jurist and judge al-Qadi Ismail ibn Ishaq al-Jahdami (199/200–282 AH / 815–896 CE) that collects textual reports concerning the merits and rulings of invoking blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad.

Scope and Methodology

The work is considered among the earliest dedicated compilations devoted specifically to the subject of invoking blessings and peace upon the Prophet. Al-Qadi Ismail composed the book according to the methodology of hadith scholars (‘ala tariqat al-muhaddithin), providing complete chains of transmission (asānīd) for each report.

The text contains 107 narrated traditions in total, all recorded with their isnads. These include prophetic traditions (marfu‘), non-continuous reports (marāsīl), and statements attributed to the Companions and Successors (mawqūfāt), addressing topics such as the divine reward for invoking blessings, the etiquette and formulas of sending blessings, invoking blessings on Fridays, and the reprehensibility of neglecting to do so when the Prophet is mentioned.

Reception and Editions

The treatise served as an early source for later scholars writing specialized treatises on the same subject or commenting on relevant hadiths, including Ibn al-Qayyim in Jala' al-Afham, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Fath al-Bari, and al-Maqrizi in Imta' al-Asma', who quoted directly from al-Qadi Ismail's chains and texts.

The text was edited and verified with critical commentary on its chains by the hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani and published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut.
