Fada'il al-Sahaba (Virtues of the Companions) is a hadith work compiled by the traditionist Abu Abd al-Rahman Ahmad ibn Shu'ayb al-Nasa'i (215–303 AH / 830–915 CE), dedicated to the merits and virtues of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
Composition and Context
The text originally constitutes a major thematic book within al-Nasa'i's larger encyclopedic compendium, al-Sunan al-Kubra . It compiles prophetic narrations and historical reports documenting the exemplary character, standing, and individual merits of the Companions, including figures such as Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah and Abd Allah ibn Salam . Due to its thematic cohesion and significance, it has historically circulated and been studied both as an integral component of al-Sunan al-Kubra and as a standalone treatise .
Scholarly Reliance and Publication
The work is recognized as one of the primary classical reference texts for hadith reports on the virtues of the Companions and was utilized as a core source in major cross-referencing and hadith compilation projects, such as al-Musnad al-Jami' .
The treatise has appeared in several printed editions:
- An edition edited by Faruq Hammadah, published in Casablanca, Morocco, by Matba'at al-Najah al-Jadida in 1404 AH (1984 CE) and Dar al-Thaqafa .
- A single-volume edition published in Beirut by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya in 1405 AH (1984–1985 CE) .
