Fada'il al-Qur'an (full title: Fada'il al-Qur'an al-Azim wa-Thawab Man Ta'allamahu wa-'Allamahu wa-Ma A'adda Allahu li-Talihi fi al-Jinan) is a hadith treatise by the Hanbali traditionist Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (569–643 AH / 1173–1245 CE) compiled on the virtues of the Quran, the merits of teaching and learning it, and the rewards prepared in Paradise for its reciters .

Content and Method

The work is arranged in the traditional hadith methodology of musnad compilations, wherein al-Maqdisi transmits prophetic reports with his own chains of narration (asānīd) through his teachers in cities such as Baghdad and Isfahan . Following the narrations, he adds critical appraisals of their transmission lines, noting authentications and identifying which compilers—such as al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj—recorded specific variations of the reports .

The text is organized under thematic chapter headings addressing various virtues of recitation and study, including:

  • The merit of learning and teaching the Quran (Fadl ta'allum al-Qur'an wa-ta'limih) .
  • The virtue of the proficient reciter and the reward of the one who recites despite difficulty (Fadl al-mahir bi-l-Qur'an wa-ajr man qara'ahu wa-huwa 'alayhi shaqq) .
  • The reward of one who struggles and stutters while reciting (Ajr al-mutata'ti' fih) .
  • The commendable longing to emulate the possessor of the Quran (Dhikr ightibat sahib al-Qur'an) .

Transmission and Reception

The book is classified as a single concise part (juz') by biographical historians such as al-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam and Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', as well as Ibn Rajab in Dhayl Tabaqat al-Hanabila . It was also listed by Haji Khalifa in Kashf al-Zunun among specialized works written on the genre of the virtues of the Quran .

Later scholars transmitted the work through formal isnads; Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani narrated an abridged selection (muntaqa) from it with his chain of transmission in al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras and al-Majma' al-Mu'assas, and al-Rudani transmitted it back to al-Diya' in Silat al-Khalaf bi-Mawsul al-Salaf . Additionally, Ibn Tulun extracted a selection of forty hadiths from the text .

Manuscripts and Publication

A manuscript copy of the treatise, titled Fada'il al-Qur'an wa-Thawab Man Ta'allamahu wa-'Allamahu, is preserved at Leiden University Library (44 pages, copied in 866 AH) . The text was edited by Salah ibn 'Ayid al-Shalahi and published by Dar Ibn Hazm in 1421 AH / 2000 CE .
