Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin (The Virtues of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs) is a hadith treatise by the traditionist and historian Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani (336–430 AH / 948–1038 CE) dedicated to documenting the distinctive virtues and merits of the four Rightly-Guided Caliphs .

Purpose and Composition

In his opening remarks, Abu Nu'aym explains that he modeled the work upon the treatise of the jurist Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Nisaburi, known as al-Sibghi . He composed it as an explained dictation aimed at addressing doubts and countering the positions of extremist factions among the Rawafid and Khawarij regarding their deviation from the established way of the Companions and Successors in upholding the caliphate and leadership of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs .

Structure and Content

The work compiles transmitted prophetic traditions and reports (athar) with full chains of narration (asānīd), structuring the virtues of each caliph sequentially in dedicated sections focusing on their unique and unshared merits :

  • Abu Bakr al-Siddiq: Abu Nu'aym cites narrations highlighting Abu Bakr's unmatched preeminence after the prophets, including reports where the Prophet ﷺ remarked on nobody being superior to him after the prophets and messengers .
  • Umar ibn al-Khattab: The collection records narrations affirming Umar's distinction, including the prophetic declaration: «إن الله عز وجل جعل الحق على لسان عمر وقلبه» ("Indeed, Allah Mighty and Majestic has placed the truth upon the tongue and heart of Umar") .
  • Uthman ibn Affan: The author includes reports detailing Uthman's singular acts of devotion, such as outfitting the Army of Hardship (Jaysh al-Usrah) with one thousand dinars, upon which the Prophet ﷺ stated: «ما يضر عثمان ما فعل بعد هذا اليوم» ("Nothing Uthman does after this day will harm him") .
  • Ali ibn Abi Talib: The work presents traditions underscoring Ali's status, such as the Prophet's ﷺ statement: «أنت مني بمنزلة هارون من موسى غير أنه لا نبي بعدي» ("You are to me in the position of Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me") and «إن عليا مني وأنا منه وهو ولي كل مؤمن» ("Indeed Ali is from me and I am from him, and he is the ally of every believer") .

Transmission

The surviving transmission of the text traces back through Abu Nu'aym, who dictated it in 426 AH . It was transmitted from him by Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Haddad, then heard from al-Haddad by Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Tarsusi and Abu al-Hasan Mas'ud ibn Abi Mansur al-Jammal in Isfahan in 591 AH, and subsequently read by Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi .
