Durus fi al-Aqida - al-Rajhi

Durus fi al-Aqida (Lessons on Creed) is a collection of transcribed audio lectures on Islamic theology delivered by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajihi (b. c. 1360 AH / 1941 CE) .

Author and Context

Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Rajihi was born around 1360 AH in al-Bukayriyyah within the al-Qassim region . He memorized the Quran and undertook his early education in his hometown before moving to Riyadh, where he graduated from the Faculty of Sharia at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University . He subsequently joined the university's Faculty of Usul al-Din as an associate professor in the Department of Creed and Contemporary Trends . Among his primary teachers were the former head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Abd Allah ibn Humayd, and former Grand Mufti Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, whom al-Rajihi accompanied closely from his arrival in Riyadh until his death, adopting his approach to textual analysis and the commentary of classical treatises .

Contents and Subject Matter

The material comprises recorded and transcribed study circles dedicated to foundational treatises of Sunni theology across classical and early modern periods . Among the texts addressed in his theology lessons are:

  • Al-Aqida al-Tahawiyya by Abu Ja'far al-Tahawi .
  • Al-Fatwa al-Hamawiyya by Ibn Taymiyyah .
  • Lum'at al-I'tiqad by Ibn Qudamah .
  • Kitab al-Iman by Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam .
  • Al-Aqida al-Saffariniyya by Muhammad al-Saffarini .

Method

The lessons adhere to the theological principles of the early Muslim forebears (al-Salaf) . In the treatment of the divine names and attributes (asma wa-sifat), the author emphasizes taking the texts of the Quran and the Prophetic Sunna according to their apparent meaning without figurative interpretation (ta'wil) except with clear evidence, affirming that divine names are established exclusively through scriptural revelation (tawqifiyya) rather than independent rational deduction .
