Durr al-Muhtadi wa Dhukhr al-Muqtadi Nazm Bidayat al-Mubtadi, commonly known as al-Hamiliyya, is a versification of al-Marghinani’s legal text Bidayat al-mubtadi in Hanafi jurisprudence, composed by the Yemeni Hanafi jurist and poet Siraj al-Din Abu Bakr ibn Ali ibn Musa al-Hamali (d. 769 AH / 1367 CE) .
Background and Composition
The underlying prose work, Bidayat al-mubtadi, compiles the legal rulings of al-Quduri’s Mukhtasar alongside Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani’s al-Jami al-saghir . Al-Hamali composed the poem to render the prose text into concise and accessible verse that would facilitate memorization for beginners and provide guidance for advanced students . He undertook the composition following the encouragement of his teacher in Yemen, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Nuh, as well as the instruction of his father .
Content and Structure
The work covers the branches of Hanafi law (furu al-fiqh), opening with the chapter on ritual purification (Kitab al-Taharah) and proceeding through legal duties, recommended practices, and nullifications according to the school . In certain passages, the author provided alternative formulations for specific lines—sometimes prefaced with the phrase "or it may be said" (aw yuqal)—to clarify the legal meaning and offer stylistic variations of the verse .
The text is published as part of the compilation Majmu al-Rifaa .
