Durar min Tafsir al-Qurtubi (Pearls from the Exegesis of al-Qurtubi) is a contemporary compilation of selected scholarly benefits and exegetical excerpts from al-Qurtubi’s (d. 671 AH / 1273 CE) celebrated commentary al-Jami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an, compiled by Ahmad ibn Salih ibn ‘Umar ibn Murshid .
Background and Origin
The material collected in the work originated as a weekly radio broadcast delivered by Ahmad ibn Salih ibn Murshid on the Quran Radio station (Idha‘at al-Qur'an al-Karim) across three broadcasting cycles during the years 1442, 1443, and 1444 AH . The author completed the compilation in Riyadh, dating his introduction to 4 Rabi‘ al-Thani 1444 AH and the conclusion to 11 Rajab 1444 AH .
Structure and Method
The work comprises an introduction followed by a collection of 1,411 selected benefits and reflections numbered sequentially .
In the introductory section, Ibn Murshid outlines seven thematic points summarizing the scope, merits, and scholarly characteristics of al-Qurtubi’s exegesis . These introductory reflections are derived from the assessments of Abd al-Karim ibn Abd Allah al-Khudayr, drawn from his lecture titled Tajribati fi Tadris Tafsir al-Imam al-Qurtubi Khilal 22 Sanah ("My Experience in Teaching the Exegesis of Imam al-Qurtubi over 22 Years") delivered at the Tafsir Center for Quranic Studies on 28 Safar 1435 AH, as well as his commentary lesson on 8 Jumada al-Ula 1443 AH . These points address the comprehensive nature of al-Qurtubi's work—spanning legal rulings, linguistic nuances, variant readings, and exhortations—while also noting aspects such as its inclusion of unverified narrations and its adherence to the Ash'ari theological school regarding divine attributes .
For the core text, Ibn Murshid gathered the excerpts based on the fourth edition of Tafsir al-Qurtubi published by Dar al-Kutub al-‘Arabi in Beirut and edited by ‘Abd al-Razzaq al-Mahdi (1422 AH) . Each entry is referenced with its volume and page numbers from that edition, with the compiler transcribing passages in full or abridging them where indicated .
