Diwan Jarir bi Sharh Muhammad ibn Habib is the recension and commentary on the poetic collection of the Umayyad poet Jarir (d. 110 AH / 728 CE), compiled and annotated by the philologist and genealogist Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Habib (d. 245 AH / 859 CE) .
Transmission and Structure
The recension prepared by Muhammad ibn Habib is based primarily on the transmission of Jarir's great-grandson, 'Umara ibn 'Aqil ibn Bilal ibn Jarir, as narrated through the philologist Abu 'Abd Allah Ibn al-A'rabi (Muhammad ibn Ziyad) . Surviving manuscript traditions of the collection predominantly derive from 'Umara's line of transmission .
From Ibn Habib, the recension and commentary were transmitted by Abu Sa'id al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Sukkari, who preserved Ibn Habib's textual arrangement and commentary without major additions . The transmission subsequently branched into distinct paths documented in the manuscript headings:
- Through Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas ibn Ahmad ibn al-Furat, on the authority of his father Abu al-Khattab al-'Abbas ibn Ahmad, from al-Sukkari, from Ibn Habib .
- Through the judge Abu Sa'id al-Hasan ibn 'Abd Allah al-Sirafi, on the authority of Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn 'Arafa al-Nahwi (known as Niftawayh), from al-Sukkari, from Ibn Habib .
The primary manuscript records an audition certificate (sama') belonging to Abu al-Ghana'im Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khallal .
Content and Method
The work compiles Jarir's extensive poetic output, including his encomia, elegies, and polemical satires (naqa'id and hija'). Ibn Habib's commentary explains rare and obscure vocabulary (gharib), grammatical and syntactic structures, rhetorical nuances, and the genealogical and historical contexts of the tribes and events mentioned in the verses.
Publication
The work was critically edited by Nu'man Muhammad Amin Taha and published in two volumes by Dar al-Ma'arif in Cairo (1969–1971) as the 43rd entry in its Dhakha'ir al-'Arab series . A concise earlier edition of Jarir's Diwan linked to Ibn Habib's recension was also published with notes by Muhammad Isma'il al-Sawi in Cairo .
