Diwan Dhi al-Rumma - bi sharh Abi Nasr al-Bahili is the recension and commentary on the poetical collection of the Umayyad poet Dhu al-Rumma (Ghaylan ibn 'Uqba, d. 117 AH / 735 CE) compiled by the Basran philologist Abu Nasr al-Bahili (d. 231 AH / 846 CE) .

Transmission and Content

The diwan preserves the poetic corpus of Dhu al-Rumma, an Arabian desert poet renowned for his extensive bedouin vocabulary, descriptions of the wilderness, and love poetry . Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn Hatim al-Bahili, a prominent student and companion of al-Asma'i, dictated the collection along with his linguistic explanations and commentaries .

The primary transmission of the work stems from the Kufan grammarian Abu al-Abbas Thalab (Ahmad ibn Yahya), who took down the dictation directly from Abu Nasr and added textual variants and glosses within the work . Later scholars documented parallel transmissions of Tha'lab's recension; Abu Yaqub al-Nujayrami recorded reading it through:

  • Abu al-Husayn Ali ibn Ahmad al-Muhallabi from Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Wallad from his father from Tha'lab .
  • Ja'far ibn Shadhan al-Qummi from Abu Umar al-Zahid (Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahid) from Tha'lab .

Modern Editions

The work was critically edited by 'Abd al-Quddus Abu Salih and published by the Arab Academy of Damascus in 1392–1393 AH (1972–1973 CE), with subsequent editions issued by Mu'assasat al-Iman in Beirut and Mu'assasat al-Risala .
