Dirasat fi Ulum al-Quran (Studies in the Sciences of the Quran) is a contemporary scholarly manual on the Quranic sciences authored by the Saudi scholar Fahd ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Rumi.

Scope and Content

The work examines foundational areas within the Quranic disciplines (ulum al-Quran). Among its principal subjects is the historical emergence and systematic development of the Quranic sciences as an independent discipline. It addresses the distinctive features of the preservation of the Quran, emphasizing its oral memorization across generations as a communal obligation (fard kifayah) that establishes mass transmission (tawatur), as well as the unbroken oral chain of narration (ittisal al-sanad) traced back through the Successors and Companions to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The book also discusses the naming of Quranic surahs, upholding the position that their names were established through prophetic instruction (tawqif). In its treatment of Quranic exegesis (tafsir), it outlines the ethical qualifications and conduct (adab al-mufassir) incumbent upon an interpreter, highlighting sincerity of intention solely for God, acting upon one's knowledge, and demonstrating commendable moral character.

Publication History

The work has been printed in multiple editions. Early printings include a sixth edition published in 1416 AH (1995–1996 CE) and a ninth edition in 1421 AH (2000–2001 CE) by Maktabat al-Tawbah in Riyadh.
