Dirasat fi Ilm al-Lugha (دراسات في علم اللغة, "Studies in Linguistics") is a work on Arabic linguistics written by the scholar Kamal Bishr (d. 1436 AH / 2015 CE) .

Content and Themes

The book addresses foundational concepts in linguistics and evaluates the treatment of linguistic branches within classical Arabic scholarship . Among its central discussions is the status of phonetics (ilm al-aswat) in the classical tradition . Bishr argues that classical authors omitted independent treatises on phonetics for two primary reasons: first, early authorities treated phonetic analysis merely as an adjunct to other fields, as seen when al-Khalil ibn Ahmad introduced phonetic classifications as a preface to his dictionary Kitab al-Ayn, and when Sibawayh placed phonetic discussions at the end of his work as an appendix; second, later grammarians largely abandoned the rigorous study of speech sounds, leaving that domain to scholars of Quranic recitation (tajwid) under the assumption that it pertained exclusively to their discipline .

Publication History

The work was issued in multiple editions by Dar al-Ma'arif in Cairo . A second part appeared in 1969 CE, followed by a second edition of the work in 1971 CE, and it reached a ninth edition by 1986 CE .
