Dirasat fi al-Fann al-Sahafi (Studies in Journalistic Art) is a theoretical and applied treatise on journalism written by the Egyptian media scholar Ibrahim Imam and completed in January 1972 .

Purpose and Scope

The work was composed to address journalism specifically as an art form rather than confining research to its historical, political, or social dimensions . Imam frames journalistic art as a phenomenon intrinsically linked to urban civilization and public communication, positioning the journalist as a social mediator between technical specialists and the general public . The book analyzes the methods by which abstract academic knowledge and real-world events are simplified, illustrated, and conveyed clearly to broad audiences without resorting to triviality or exaggeration .

The scope of the study integrates editorial content with the visual and technological aspects of print media, treating textual forms (news, articles, features) and visual components (typography, page makeup, photographs, cartoons, graphics, and advertising) as interconnected elements of journalistic communication .

The book opens with an introduction setting out the objectives and theoretical framework of journalistic art, followed by nine major parts (abwab) and concluding bibliographies of Arabic, translated, and foreign sources :
