Dirasa fi al-Sira (A Study of the Prophetic Biography) is an academic work by the Iraqi historian Imad al-Din Khalil, designed to provide a systematic and analytical presentation of the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
Background and Purpose
The book originated from Khalil's experience teaching the Prophet's biography in the Faculty of Arts for more than six years . It was conceived as a university-level textbook intended to offer students a concentrated, balanced, and methodically sound understanding of the core historical facts . Khalil sought to steer clear of apologetic tendencies, legendary embellishments, and unverified narrative additions (Isra'iliyyat), while equally avoiding materialist interpretations that strip the biography of its spiritual character .
Methodological Approach
Departing from the strict chronological and annalistic framework typical of classical chroniclers, Khalil organized the material into homogenous thematic units . He argued that rigid adherence to a timeline often fragments unified historical episodes and groups unrelated events together . By treating the biography as a multifaceted subject encompassing military, political, civilizational, legal, doctrinal, and spiritual dimensions, each unit is allocated sufficient space for synthesis and historical analysis .
Sources and Critical Standards
Khalil advocated bypassing late compilations—such as those of Ali ibn Burhan al-Din al-Halabi, Abu al-Fida, Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi, and Ibn al-Athir—which he identified as sources of late narrative inflation and ungrounded accretions . Instead, he based his reconstruction directly on foundational early works, including:
- Ibn Hisham's al-Sira al-Nabawiyya
- Ibn Sa'd's al-Tabaqat al-Kubra
- Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari's Tarikh al-Rusul wa-l-Muluk
- Al-Waqidi's Kitab al-Maghazi
- Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Baladhuri's Ansab al-Ashraf
- Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari's Sahih al-Bukhari
Under this framework, historical reports are critically cross-examined against the text of the Quran, authentic Sunnah, rational inquiry, and established historical context . In formulating this critical approach, Khalil drew upon the methodological contributions of contemporary scholars and historians such as Jawad Ali, Mahmud Shit Khattab, and Muhammad Izzat Darwaza .
Publication History
The work went through multiple editions, including a thirteenth edition published in Beirut by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in 1981 CE .
