Din al-Haqq (The True Religion) is an introductory treatise on Islamic creed and fundamentals by the contemporary Saudi scholar and preacher Abd al-Rahman ibn Hammad Al Umar (1354–1437 AH / c. 1935–2016 CE), first published in 1395 AH / 1975 CE to present a concise and comprehensive explanation of Islam .
Purpose and Scope
The author framed the book as a "call to salvation" addressed broadly to every rational human being, male or female . Its primary objective is to present the essential knowledge necessary for an individual to attain salvation and happiness in this life and the hereafter: knowing God the Creator and worshipping Him alone, knowing the Prophet Muhammad and following him, and knowing the religion of Islam and acting in accordance with its teachings . The text was designed for both non-Muslims seeking to understand the tenets and rulings of Islam and Muslims wishing to learn its core principles .
Structure and Contents
The book is organized around three primary foundational principles:
- Introduction and Dedication: Outlines the purpose of the work and the necessity of rational inquiry into religious truth .
- Chapter One (Knowledge of God the Creator): Discusses rational and observational proofs for God's existence and sovereignty, divine attributes such as life, hearing, sight, speech, and oneness, and refutes claims of divine sonship or physical partners .
- Chapter Two (Knowledge of the Messenger): Covers the universal mission of Muhammad as the seal of the prophets, his miracles, and his descriptions and prophecies found in earlier scriptures like the Torah and the Gospel .
- Chapter Three (Knowledge of the True Religion of Islam): Defines Islam, its pillars, articles of faith, moral guidance, and practical rulings .
The book also addresses misconceptions raised by critics of Islam, noting that the un-Islamic practices and wrongdoings of some nominal Muslims do not represent the religion itself, and closes with an exhortation to embrace Islam and seek steadfastness upon it .
Method and Approach
The author relied exclusively on the Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad as the sole definitive references for Islamic doctrine and practice . He avoided blind imitation (taqlid) and included warnings against sectarian groups that deviate from standard orthodox teachings, so that readers might recognize and avoid them . To maintain readability in the main text while ensuring doctrinal precision, the author incorporated explanatory footnotes throughout the work to clarify terminology and elaborate on complex issues .
Reception, Translations, and Commentaries
Following its initial publication in 1395 AH, the book gained wide acclaim among contemporary scholars for its clarity, brevity, and comprehensive scope . Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz endorsed the work and directed the translation department of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta in Saudi Arabia to render it into various global languages . Consequently, it was translated into more than twenty languages, including English, French, Russian, Urdu, Chinese, Turkish, Japanese, Bengali, Swedish, Uzbek, Hausa, Tamil, Tagalog/Maranao, and Malayalam . It has been printed and distributed extensively by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da'wah, and Guidance as well as community preaching organizations . Before his death, the author specifically bequeathed to his descendants that they continue to promote and publish the book and its translations .
The Saudi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak delivered a comprehensive commentary on the book over thirty sessions at the al-Khulayfi Mosque in Riyadh between 1440 and 1441 AH, which was compiled and published under the title al-Ta'liq wa-l-Bayan 'ala al-Din al-Haqq . In his notes, al-Barrak observed that styling the title with the definite article as al-Din al-Haqq ("The True Religion") is most fitting for the book's stated scope and objective .
