Dhikr man lam yakun ‘indahu illa hadith wahid (Mention of Those Who Possessed Only One Hadith), also known by the fuller title Dhikr man lam yakun ‘indahu illa hadith wahid wa-man lam yuhaddith ‘an shaykhihi illa bi-hadith wahid, is a specialized hadith monograph (juz’) compiled by the Baghdadi hadith scholar Abu Muhammad al-Hasan al-Khallal (352–439 AH / 963–1047 CE) .
Subject Matter and Scope
The work belongs to the genre of hadith nomenclature and transmitter evaluation (mustalah al-hadith) . In it, al-Khallal documents narrators who either possessed or transmitted only a single hadith in their entire repertory, as well as transmitters who only narrated a single hadith from a specific teacher . For each entry, al-Khallal provides a complete chain of transmission (isnad) alongside explicit statements—either from earlier authorities such as al-Daraqutni or through his own scholarly assessment—confirming that the transmitter related no other narration from that particular source .
Transmission and Manuscript Tradition
The text has been preserved through two primary transmission lines originating from the author: the direct audition of Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Muqri’ from al-Khallal, and the transmission of Abu Sa‘d Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar ibn Ahmad ibn al-Qasim al-Sayrafi by written authorization (ijaza) .
A manuscript copy of the treatise is held in the collection of King Saud University Central Library in Riyadh (MS 1280/9 majami‘) .
Editions
The work was critically edited by Abu Abd al-Bari Rida Bushamah al-Jaza’iri and published jointly by Dar Ibn al-Qayyim and Dar Ibn ‘Affan in Egypt in 1425 AH / 2004 CE .
