Dhikr Ibn Abi al-Dunya wa ma waqa'a 'aliyan min hadithihi (Mention of Ibn Abi al-Dunya and What Reached Me with Elevated Chains from His Hadith) is a hadith tract (juz') authored by the Isfahanian traditionist Abu Musa al-Madini (501–581 AH / 1108–1185 CE), dedicated to the biography and elevated transmissions of the third-century scholar Ibn Abi al-Dunya (d. 281 AH) .
Scope and Contents
The monograph consists of thirty-four numbered reports divided between biographical traditions and transmitted hadiths :
- Biographical Account and Anecdotes: The opening section compiles historical reports and narrations concerning Ibn Abi al-Dunya's full name, Kufan origins, birth in 208 AH, and his career as a tutor to Abbasid princes, including al-Muktafi and al-Mu'tadid . It records reports evaluating his standing and authorship methods—such as his heavy reliance on the writings of Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Burjulani—along with statements from scholars including Ibrahim al-Harbi, Salih Jazarah, and Ibn Abi Hatim . It also cites variant reports on his death year (281 AH, with variants of 280 AH or 282 AH) and notes that Judge Yusuf ibn Ya'qub prayed over him at his burial in the Shuniziyyah cemetery .
- Narrations and Elevated Chains ('Uluww): The latter half records prophetic hadiths, ethical reports, and poetic verses transmitted from Ibn Abi al-Dunya or through parallel routes that reached Abu Musa al-Madini via short chains of transmission (isnanid 'aliyah), accompanied by his critical remarks on transmitters and variant attributions .
