Dhikr Asma al-Tabi'in wa-man ba'dahum mimman sahhat riwayatuhu 'an al-thiqat 'inda al-Bukhari wa-Muslim (Mention of the Names of the Successors and Those After Them Whose Narration from Trustworthy Transmitters Is Deemed Authentic According to al-Bukhari and Muslim) is a biographical treatise on hadith transmitters by the Baghdadian traditionist and jurist al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) .
Subject and Scope
The work is dedicated to enumerating the transmitters from the generation of the Successors (al-Tabi'un) down to the authors' direct shaykhs whose narrations were included in the canonical collections of Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, or in either of the two . It serves as a specialized inventory of the trustworthy transmitters of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, supplementing al-Daraqutni's companion treatise on the Companions mentioned in the two collections to provide a complete record of the narrators of the Two Sahihs .
Structure and Method
The treatise is organized into two distinct sections:
- The Transmitters of al-Bukhari: Listing the Successors and subsequent generations up to his direct teachers whose narrations are contained in al-Bukhari's al-Jami' al-Sahih .
- The Transmitters of Muslim: Listing the Successors and subsequent generations included in Muslim's al-Sahih .
Al-Daraqutni arranged the names in both sections alphabetically ('ala huruf al-mu'jam), although the alphabetical sequence in the section on al-Bukhari's narrators is approximate rather than strictly precise, exhibiting occasional variations in order .
Transmission and Editions
A manuscript of the work was transcribed from al-Daraqutni's original autograph via the copy of al-Humaydi, preserved in the Köprülü Library in Istanbul . A photographic copy of this manuscript, comprising fourteen folios, is housed in the Central Library of Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University . The text has been published in Beirut by Mu'assasat al-Kutub al-Thaqafiyya (1406 AH) and Dar al-Fikr, edited by Buran al-Dinnawi and Kamal Yusuf al-Hut .
