Dhikr al-Musafaha (full title: Juz' fihi dhikr al-musafaha wa-ma warada fiha min al-akhbar 'an al-Nabiy al-mustafa al-mukhtar) is a hadith treatise by the Hanbali scholar Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (d. 643 AH / 1245 CE) devoted to prophetic traditions and narrations concerning the practice and virtues of handshaking.

Content and Transmission

The work is a thematic hadith monograph (juz') in which Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi compiled chains of transmission and texts pertaining to handshaking upon meeting, its etiquette, and related reports. In his commentary on al-Nawawi's al-Adhkar, Ibn Allan noted that al-Diya included transmissions with full chains of narration within this treatise, including related poetic and historical accounts.

The tract was transmitted through continuous chains of transmission from the author. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded it in his transmission catalogue, al-Majma al-muassas, under the title Kitab al-musafaha, narrating it by way of an authorization (ijaza) from Sulayman ibn Hamza al-Maqdisi, who had heard it directly from Diya al-Din.

Manuscripts and Editions

An autograph manuscript copied by Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi himself survives in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (within collective manuscript no. 83, fols. 30–38), containing numerous reading certificates (sama'at) recorded during the author's lifetime and before later scholars. A facsimile copy dated 629 AH, also in the handwriting of al-Diya, is preserved at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (fols. 1–11).

The treatise has been edited and published, including an edition prepared by 'Amr ibn Abd al-Mun'im Salim published by Dar al-Diya in Tanta, Egypt (1424 AH / 2003 CE).
