Dhayl Dhayl Tarikh Mawlid al-Ulama wa Wafayatihim (Continuation of the Continuation of the History of Scholars' Births and Deaths) is a biographical chronicle by the Damascene hadith scholar and historian Hibat Allah ibn Ahmad Ibn al-Akfani (444–524 AH / 1052–1130 CE) .

Background and Scope

The work belongs to an established lineage of biographical dictionaries organized chronologically according to the years of death of Muslim scholars . The parent work, Tarikh Mawlid al-Ulama wa Wafayatihim, was authored by Abu Sulayman Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zabr al-Raba'i (d. 379 AH / 989 CE), covering the period from 1 AH down to 338 AH . Ibn al-Akfani's teacher, Abu Muhammad Abd al-Aziz ibn Ahmad al-Kattani (d. 466 AH / 1073 CE), subsequently compiled the first supplement (Dhayl), picking up from 338 AH and ending at 462 AH .

Ibn al-Akfani continued his teacher's chronicle, recording the obituaries of scholars from the year 463 AH up to 485 AH . In addition to this forward continuation, he supplied sixty-three biographical notices as additions (ziyadat) for scholars who had died during the time span covered by al-Kattani's work (338–462 AH) but had been omitted from it . The lineage of successive supplements to this work was later carried forward into the seventh century AH by Sharaf al-Din Ali ibn al-Mufaddal al-Maqdisi (d. 611 AH / 1214 CE) .
