Dhayl al-Taqyid fi Ruwat al-Sunan wa al-Asanid (The Supplement to the Restriction Regarding the Transmitters of Sunan and Asanid) is a biographical dictionary of Hadith transmitters compiled by the Meccan historian and Hadith scholar al-Taqi al-Fasi (775–832 AH / 1373–1429 CE) . The work serves as a continuation (dhayl) and critical supplement to al-Taqyid li-Ma'rifat Ruwat al-Sunan wa al-Masanid by the Hanbali scholar Ibn Nuqta (d. 629 AH) .
Background and Purpose
Al-Fasi stated in his introduction that after examining Ibn Nuqta's al-Taqyid, he found it immensely beneficial but observed several gaps in its coverage . According to al-Fasi, Ibn Nuqta had recorded earlier transmitters of canonical works but omitted several well-known contemporaries of his own era, mentioned some transmitters while neglecting parts or details of their transmissions, and left out other figures altogether . Al-Fasi composed his supplement to rectify these omissions, supply missing transmissions, and extend biographical coverage down to the narrators who lived after Ibn Nuqta's era up to his own time .
Scope and Content
The work documents transmitters who narrated a broad selection of major Hadith compilations and related Islamic texts . These include:
- Al-Muwatta of Malik ibn Anas across multiple transmission lines (noting that Ibn Nuqta had restricted his coverage of al-Muwatta exclusively to the transmission of Abu Mus'ab) .
- The two Sahih collections of al-Bukhari and Muslim, the four Sunan (Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah), and the Sunan collections of al-Shafi'i (via al-Muzani), al-Daraqutni, and al-Bayhaqi .
- Sahih Ibn Hibban, Sahih Abi Awwana, transmitted portions of Sahih al-Isma'ili, and Abu Nu'aym's al-Mustakhraj 'ala Muslim .
- The Musnad collections of al-Shafi'i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, al-Humaydi, al-'Adani, al-Darimi, Abd ibn Humayd, Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili (via Ibn Hamdan), and Musnad al-Shihab by al-Quda'i (which was absent in Ibn Nuqta's original work) .
- Major Ma'ajim (such as those of al-Tabarani, Ibn Qani', and Ibn Jumi') and prominent Mashyakhat .
- Works on the Prophet's ﷺ life, traits, and virtues, such as al-Shama'il of al-Tirmidhi, Dala'il al-Nubuwwa of al-Bayhaqi, al-Shifa of al-Qadi Iyad, the Sira works of Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Sayyid al-Nas, and the Maghazi of Musa ibn 'Uqba .
- Biographical works on the Companions, including Ma'rifat al-Sahaba by Ibn Mandah, al-Isti'ab by Ibn Abd al-Barr, and Hilyat al-Awliya by Abu Nu'aym .
- Treatises in legal theory, Hadith sciences, ethics, and asceticism, including al-Shafi'i's Ikhtilaf al-Hadith and al-Risala, Makarim al-Akhlaq by al-Khara'iti, al-Adab by al-Bukhari and al-Bayhaqi, al-Zuhd by Ibn al-Mubarak, Risalat al-Qushayri, 'Awarif al-Ma'arif by al-Suhrawardi, al-Mujalasa by al-Dinawari, and the compilations known as al-Ghaylaniyyat, Fawa'id al-Khila'i, and Fawa'id al-Thaqafi .
Structure and Method
The biographical entries are arranged alphabetically by the transmitters' given names, opening with those named Muhammad (such as Muhammad ibn Ahmad) . In each biography, al-Fasi records the transmitter's full name, lineage, and nisbas, details the specific books or portions of texts they heard and from which teachers, and provides precise chains of audition (sama') or general license (ijaza) . The entries also identify the students who transmitted from them, note their teaching positions, and supply dates of birth and death when known .
Editions
The text has been published in modern scholarly editions, including an edition prepared by Kamal Yusuf al-Hut (Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyya, Beirut, 1410 AH / 1990 CE) and an edition edited by Muhammad Salih ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Murad (Umm al-Qura University, Mecca, 1410 AH / 1990 CE) .
