Daw al-Shumu fi Sharh al-Majmu (Arabic: ضوء الشموع شرح المجموع, also recorded as Daw al-Shumu ala Sharh al-Majmu and Daw al-Shumu ala al-Majmu) is an expanded supercommentary (hashiyah) on Maliki jurisprudence by the Egyptian scholar al-Amir Muhammad al-Sanbawi al-Maliki (1154–1232 AH / 1742–1817 CE) .

Context and Purpose

The work serves as a gloss on the author's own commentary (Sharh al-Majmu), which elucidates his foundational legal compendium, al-Majmu (also referred to as Mukhtasar al-Amir) . In composing the base text, al-Amir sought to emulate the structure, conciseness, and comprehensiveness of Mukhtasar Khalil in Maliki furu (substantive law), while modifying positions where later authorities deemed the preponderant (al-rajih) view in the school to differ from Khalil's selections, in addition to incorporating further legal branches .

Reception and Editions

The text of al-Majmu and its commentary achieved early acceptance in Cairo during the lifetime of al-Amir's teacher Ali al-Adawi al-Sa'idi, who reportedly consulted Mukhtasar al-Amir when pausing over difficult legal matters .

Daw al-Shumu has been preserved in numerous manuscript copies across North Africa and the Middle East, including holdings at the al-Azhar Library, al-Qarawiyyin Library, and the National Library of Tunisia . It was published in two large volumes in Egypt by al-Matba'a al-Khayriyya alongside the gloss of his student, al-Shaykh Hijazi al-Adawi (d. 1232 AH) .
