Dalil al-Hayran ala Mawrid al-Zaman (The Guide for the Perplexed on Mawrid al-Zaman) is a commentary on Quranic orthography (rasm) and vocalization (dabt) by the Tunisian Maliki scholar and chief of reciters at al-Zaytuna, Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Marghani (d. 1349 AH / 1930 CE) .

Subject Matter and Scope

The book serves as an extensive commentary on Mawrid al-Zam'an fi Rasm Ahruf al-Qur'an and its continuation on vocalization (dabt), composed by Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Sharishi al-Kharraz (d. 718 AH) . Al-Kharraz's original 450-verse didactic poem was dedicated to establishing the orthographical conventions of the 'Uthmanic codices specifically tailored to the canonical reading of Nafi' . Al-Marghani completed the composition of his commentary in 1325 AH .

Because al-Kharraz's poem was limited to what pertained to the reading of Nafi', the scholar Ibn 'Ashir (d. 1040 AH) had earlier authored a versified appendix titled al-I'lan bi-Takmil Mawrid al-Zaman to account for the orthographical variants required for the remaining Seven canonical readings . Al-Marghani followed suit by writing a supplementary commentary on Ibn 'Ashir's annex titled Tanbih al-Khillan ila Sharh al-I'lan bi-Takmil Mawrid al-Zaman, placing it at the conclusion of his work .

Significance and Publication

The work is considered among the prominent reference manuals on Quranic orthography and vocalization . Both commentaries were first published together in Tunis at al-Matba'a al-'Umumiyya in Rabi' al-Thani 1326 AH (1908 CE), under the direction of Muhammad al-Bahri and collated against the author's personal manuscript . Later printed editions include those edited by Abd al-Salam Muhammad al-Bakkari (Cairo, 1426 AH / 2005 CE) and Abd al-Aziz ibn Fadil al-'Anazi (Kuwait, 1432 AH / 2011 CE) .
