Dala'il al-Nubuwwa (Proofs of Prophethood) is a contemporary theological and biographical work by Munqidh al-Saqqar (Dr. Munqidh ibn Mahmud al-Saqqar), dedicated to establishing the proofs and evidentiary signs of the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ based on authentic Islamic tradition .

Background and Objectives

The author framed the book around the second part of the Islamic testimony of faith (shahadah)—the messengerhood of Muhammad ﷺ—emphasizing that belief in prophethood must rest on definitive evidence, knowledge, and reasoned inquiry rather than blind imitation (taqlid) . Al-Saqqar wrote the work to strengthen the convictions of believers and to provide an evidential presentation of the Prophet's character and mission in response to widespread contemporary doubts, misconceptions, and allegations leveled against him .

Methodology

Al-Saqqar adopted a selective and critical methodology regarding source material:

  • He restricted his citations strictly to authentic (sahih) reports evaluated according to the criteria of hadith scholars .
  • He intentionally excluded weak (da'if) and anomalous (gharib) narrations that commonly overburdened classical compilations of prophetic biography (sirah) and proofs of prophethood .
  • He avoided claiming total exhaustiveness, deliberately leaving out well-known authentic reports or specialized technical treatments of certain linguistic and scientific facets of inimitability, leaving them to field specialists .

Structure and Content

The author organized the evidentiary proofs of prophethood into six primary categories :

  1. Unseen Knowledge and Predictions (al-Ghuyub): Accounts of roughly a thousand unseen matters foretold by the Prophet ﷺ—found in the Quran and Sunnah—that came to pass during his lifetime, after his death, or will unfold near the Day of Judgment, as well as scientific signs corroborated by modern empirical observation .
  2. Sensory Miracles (al-Mu'jizat al-Hissiyya): Physical supernatural events granted by God, including the multiplication of food, the healing of the sick, and the splitting of the moon .
  3. Spiritual and Providential Signs (al-Dala'il al-Ma'nawiyya): Manifestations of divine support, such as God answering his prayers, divine protection preserving him from being killed, and the triumph and spread of his message .
  4. The Noble Quran: Described as the greatest, eternal, and enduring miracle, containing multifaceted inimitability (i'jaz) in its legislative, rhetorical, and scientific dimensions .
  5. Biblical and Prior Prophetic Foretellings: Predictions, covenants, and glad tidings of his coming found in the scriptures of earlier prophets .
  6. Prophetic Character and Personal Conduct (Akhlaq wa Ahwal Shakhsiyya): The moral perfection, sublime manners, and integrity demonstrated across his personal life and leadership, which reflect divine upbringing .

Publication

The book was published in Mecca by the Muslim World League (Rabitat al-'Alam al-Islami) .
