Daif Sunan al-Tirmidhi (The Weak Narrations of Sunan al-Tirmidhi) is a hadith critical work by Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) that isolates and evaluates the weak narrations contained in the Sunan (or al-Jami') of al-Tirmidhi .

Purpose and Scope

The work was produced as part of al-Albani's broader project to distinguish authentic from inauthentic traditions across the canonical collections of the Sunan . It extracts narrations from al-Tirmidhi's collection that al-Albani deemed weak (da'if), fabricated (mawdu'), repudiated (munkar), or anomalous (shadhdh) .

Method

Rather than adhering uncritically to al-Tirmidhi's own classifications, al-Albani reevaluated the chains of transmission independently . In doing so, he upgraded several narrations that al-Tirmidhi had declared weak or defective—elevating them to sound (sahih) or fair (hasan) through corroborating paths (mutaba'at and shawahid)—which consequently reduced the proportion of weak hadiths in his assessment . Conversely, he classified other narrations that al-Tirmidhi had strengthened as weak or fabricated when their chains lacked sufficient supporting evidence . Under each hadith, al-Albani provided a concise line indicating his verdict on the chain (such as da'if al-isnad), while cross-references to his other works (such as Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifah and Mishkat al-Masabih) were added in brackets .

Publication

The work was supervised, indexed, and prepared for printing by Zuhayr al-Shawish under a commission from the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States . It was published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut in 1411 AH / 1991 CE (with an earlier imprint listed in 1408 AH) . It was subsequently issued by Maktabat al-Ma'arif in Riyadh in a single volume of 479 pages in 1419 AH / 1998 CE (and 1420 AH) .
