Daif Mawarid al-Zaman ila Zawaid Ibn Hibban (The Weak Narrations of Mawarid al-Zaman to the Additions of Ibn Hibban) is a specialized hadith criticism book by Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) that isolates and evaluates the weak and unauthentic narrations found in Mawarid al-Zaman ila Zawaid Ibn Hibban .
Background and Purpose
The source text, Mawarid al-Zaman ila Zawaid Ibn Hibban, was compiled by Nur al-Din al-Haythami (d. 807 AH / 1404 CE) to extract the narrations from Sahih Ibn Hibban (originally titled al-Musnad al-Sahih ala al-Taqasim wa-al-Anwa) that were not recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (the zawaid), arranging them according to legal topical chapters (abwab al-fiqh) .
As part of his broader scholarly project entitled Taqrib al-Sunnah bayna Yaday al-Ummah ("Bringing the Sunnah Nearer to the Community"), al-Albani critically reviewed and graded all the narrations in al-Haythami's collection . To distinguish sound narrations from weak ones for students and researchers, he divided Mawarid al-Zaman into two separate works: Sahih Mawarid al-Zaman, containing the authentic traditions, and Daif Mawarid al-Zaman, containing the weak traditions .
Structure and Scope
Out of the approximately 2,554 hadiths gathered in al-Haythami's Mawarid al-Zaman, al-Albani classified 2,237 hadiths as authentic across two volumes in Sahih Mawarid al-Zaman, while placing the remaining 348 weak and baseless narrations into the single volume of Daif Mawarid al-Zaman .
Alongside the evaluation of al-Haythami's selections, al-Albani supplemented the work with a section titled al-Zawaid ala al-Mawarid ("Additions to al-Mawarid"), in which he traced and added hadiths from Sahih Ibn Hibban that conformed to al-Haythami's criteria but had been inadvertently missed or omitted by him .
Method and Critical Analysis
In his commentary, al-Albani examines the chains of transmission (asānīd) and narrative variations, pointing out instances where Ibn Hibban exhibited leniency (tasāhul) by including narrations containing anomalous (shāddh) or denounced (munkar) additions and wordings that contradict sounder reports in the Sahihayn . He also notes critiques of contemporary editors and researchers where he argues they improperly authenticated defective lines of transmission .
Publication
The book was published in Riyadh by Dar al-Sumay'i in a first edition in 1422 AH / 2002 CE, comprising one volume that incorporates al-Zawaid ala al-Mawarid along with analytical indices .
