Daif al-Jami al-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh (The Weak [Hadiths] of al-Jami al-Saghir and Its Supplement) is a hadith evaluation work compiled by the modern hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE), cataloging and grading the inauthentic and fabricated narrations found in Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's hadith collection and its supplement .
Background and Purpose
The 10th-century scholar Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti originally compiled al-Jami al-Saghir min Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir as an abridgment of prophetic sayings from his larger compendium Jam' al-Jawami', later appending a supplement of omissions titled Ziyadat al-Jami' al-Saghir . Later, Yusuf al-Nabhani combined the two works into a single alphabetical compilation titled al-Fath al-Kabir fi Damm al-Ziyadah ila al-Jami al-Saghir, which brought together 14,471 narrations .
Although al-Suyuti had claimed in his preface that he guarded al-Jami al-Saghir against narrations reported exclusively by known fabricators or liars, al-Albani observed that the collection nevertheless contained hundreds of fabricated (mawdu') and baseless narrations, many of which al-Suyuti himself had deemed fabricated in other treatises . To distinguish the authentic from the inauthentic material across al-Nabhani's unified text, al-Albani examined the entirety of al-Fath al-Kabir and divided it into two separate works: Sahih al-Jami al-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh for sound and acceptable narrations, and Daif al-Jami al-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh for inauthentic narrations .
Structure and Methodology
The work comprises 6,469 narrations organized strictly in alphabetical order according to the opening words of each hadith, adhering to the original layout established by al-Suyuti and merged by al-Nabhani . Under each entry, al-Albani preserves the text along with the companion who narrated it and the source attribution codes, followed by his concise critical verdict on the hadith's authenticity—classifying entries under varying degrees of weakness, such as weak (da'if), severely weak (da'if jiddan), or fabricated (mawdu') .
Publication
The book was published in Beirut by al-Maktab al-Islami across several editions, including a first edition in 1388 AH (1968 CE), a second edition in 1399 AH (1979 CE), and a third edition in 1410 AH (1990 CE) .
