Da'if al-Adab al-Mufrad (The Weak [Narrations of] al-Adab al-Mufrad) is a critical hadith work compiled by the contemporary scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) to isolate and examine the inauthentic narrations contained in the classic collection al-Adab al-Mufrad by al-Bukhari (d. 256 AH).
Purpose and Scope
The work is part of al-Albani’s broader project aimed at sifting authentic (sahih) reports from defective (da'if) ones across classical hadith literature. In this volume, al-Albani gathers both prophetic traditions (marfu') and statements attributed to the Companions and Successors (mawquf) found in al-Bukhari's al-Adab al-Mufrad whose chains of transmission are weak and lack corroborating supporting paths (shawahid or mutaba'at) to strengthen them.
Structure and Method
Al-Albani includes a total of 215 weak reports in the collection. In the concluding note of the book, written in Amman on 16 Rabi' al-Thani 1414 AH, the author observes that the 215 narrations represent a significantly smaller number than what a mere isolated inspection of individual chains would suggest. This is because numerous reports whose individual chains were defective were upgraded through supporting evidence and consequently placed into its companion work, Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad, which contains 998 authentic narrations.
The text concludes with narration number 215 (numbered 1307 in the sequence of the base text) under chapter 187, titled "Chapter on Superfluous Speech" (باب فضول الكلام), on the authority of Abu Hurayrah: لا خير في فضول الكلام ("There is no good in superfluous speech").
Publication
The work was published by Dar al-Siddiq in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, with its first edition appearing in 1414 AH. It was subsequently issued bound alongside Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad in a volume spanning 112 pages in its second edition (1425 AH / 2004 CE) by Dar al-Siddiq and distributed by Mu'assasat al-Rayyan in Beirut. It has also been printed by Maktabat Ibn Taymiyyah.
