Dabt man Ghabar fiman qayyadahu Ibn Hajar (Recording Those Who Remained Among Those Recorded by Ibn Hajar) is a biographical reference work on hadith transmitters by the Hanbali scholar Ibn al-Mubarrad (also known as Yusuf ibn Hasan ibn 'Abd al-Hadi, 841–909 AH / 1437–1503 CE) . The book compiles and spells out the exact vocalizations and diacritical recordings of biographical names extracted from Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's biographical evaluation work, Taqrib al-Tahdhib .
Background and Purpose
Ibn al-Mubarrad had initially composed a work on the precise recording of names (taqyīd al-asmā'). Upon consulting Ibn Hajar's Taqrib al-Tahdhib, he found numerous name vocalizations that he wished to include in his compilation. To prevent that work from becoming excessively long, he chose to extract and isolate Ibn Hajar's vocalizations into a dedicated volume, which he entitled Dabt man Ghabar fiman qayyadahu Ibn Hajar .
Contents and Structure
The book is arranged alphabetically ('ala al-huruf) . It includes more than 3,000 biographical entries of hadith transmitters . For each entry, the author follows Ibn Hajar's approach by providing the subject's name, lineage, nisba, and kunya, followed by a verbal description (dabt kalam) that specifies the correct vowel markings and diacritics occurring in the personal name, father's name, title, or kunya .
Manuscript and Publication
The work survived in a unique manuscript preserved in the Al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under shelf number 1182, spanning 91 folios in the author's own handwriting . The cover of this manuscript bears an ownership inscription by the Damascene historian Ibn Tulun (d. 953 AH / 1546 CE) along with a transmission certificate (ijazah) written by Ibn al-Mubarrad granting permission to his children to transmit the work .
The text was edited by a committee of researchers under the supervision of Nur al-Din Talib and published in a single volume by Dar al-Nawaadir in 1432 AH / 2011 CE as part of a series collecting the works of Yusuf ibn 'Abd al-Hadi . In preparing the edition, the editors verified the entries against Muhammad 'Awwamah's edition of Taqrib al-Tahdhib and appended indices of names, titles, and kunyas .
