Buhuth Nadwat Athar al-Quran fi Tahqiq al-Wasatiyya wa Daf al-Ghuluw (Research Papers of the Symposium on the Impact of the Qur'an in Achieving Moderation and Countering Extremism) is a collective scholarly compilation containing the proceedings and research studies presented at a symposium dedicated to examining religious moderation (wasatiyya) and addressing extremism (ghuluw) through Qur'anic teachings.
Background and Context
The papers were prepared for a symposium organized under the auspices of the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da'wah and Guidance, headed by Salih ibn Abd al-Aziz Al al-Shaykh. The event was held in Mecca from 3 to 11 Sha'ban 1424 AH (October 2003 CE) alongside the King Abdulaziz International Competition for the Memorization, Recitation, and Interpretation of the Holy Qur'an. The compiled proceedings were published in two volumes, including a second edition issued by the Ministry in 1425 AH (2004 CE).
Structure and Content
The compilation is organized into four main thematic axes (mahawir), each containing specialized research papers:
- First Axis: Moderation and Balance in the Qur'an and Sunna (al-Wasatiyya wa-l-I'tidal fi al-Qur'an wa-l-Sunna): Examines the linguistic and legal definitions of moderation, its textual foundations, and its characteristics in Islamic law. It contains papers by Nasir ibn Abd al-Karim al-Aql on the definition of wasatiyya, Muhammad ibn Umar Bazmul on the textual proofs from the Qur'an and Sunna, and Sulayman ibn Ibrahim al-Ayid on the manifestations of moderation in Islam.
- Second Axis: The Qur'anic Indication of the Tolerance and Ease of Islam (Dalalat al-Qur'an 'ala Samahat al-Islam wa-Yusrih): Discusses the Islamic principles of leniency, ease (yusr), and the removal of hardship. It includes contributions by Nasir ibn Abd Allah al-Mayman on the concepts of tolerance and ease in scripture, Hamzah ibn Husayn al-Fa'r on interacting with opponents and differing viewpoints, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd al-Zunaydi on the Sharia's accommodation of practical realities concerning states and individuals.
- Third Axis: Extremism: Its Manifestations and Causes (al-Ghuluw: Mazahiruhu wa-Asbabuh): Analyzes the doctrinal and practical dimensions of radicalism. It features papers by Salih ibn Ghanim al-Sadlan on the definition of ghuluw in the Qur'an and Sunna, Abd al-Salam ibn Barjas al-Abd al-Karim on manifestations of extremism in belief, practice, and passing judgment on people, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Mu'alla al-Luwayhiq on the methodological causes of extremism and remedies for them, focusing on the Kharijites as a historical case study.
- Fourth Axis: Utilizing Qur'anic Education to Consolidate Moderation and Treat Extremism (Istithmar Ta'lim al-Qur'an fi Tarsikh al-Wasatiyya wa-Mu'alajat al-Ghuluw): Focuses on educational applications and institutions. It comprises studies by Ibrahim ibn Sa'id al-Dawsari on the Qur'anic methodology in moral and social upbringing, a study on the role of Qur'an teachers in nurturing moderation among students, and research on Qur'anic educational institutions and their role in promoting moderation by Ahmad ibn Musa al-Sahli.
