Bidayat al-Abid wa Kifayat al-Zahid (The Beginning for the Worshipper and Sufficiency for the Ascetic) is an introductory manual of Hanbali jurisprudence written by the Syrian jurist Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah al-Ba'li (1110–1192 AH / 1698–1778 CE) .

Purpose and Scope

In his preface, al-Ba'li stated that he composed the text as a beneficial abridgment confined strictly to the chapters of ritual worship (al-ibadat) according to the school of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, aiming to encourage aspiring seekers and facilitate learning for beginners . It was designed to serve as an initial stepping-stone for novice students of Hanbali jurisprudence before advancing to larger and intermediate legal manuals .

Commentaries and Editions

Al-Ba'li wrote an autocommentary on the text titled Bulugh al-Qasid Jull al-Maqasid (Reaching the Goal: The Substance of Objectives), a concise commentary without detailed textual proofs or lengthy discussions . An autograph manuscript of Bulugh al-Qasid in the author's own hand is dated to Muharram 1171 AH (preserved in the al-Asad National Library, MS 33791) .

A contemporary commentary on the text, Munyat al-Sajid bi-Sharh Bidayat al-Abid wa Kifayat al-Zahid, was written by Anas ibn Adil al-Yatama and Abd al-Aziz ibn Adnan al-Iydan and published in 1438 AH / 2017 CE . Bidayat al-Abid has also been published in editions edited by Muhammad ibn Nasir al-Ajmi (Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah, Beirut, 1417 AH / 1997 CE) and by al-Yatama and al-Iydan .
