Bayan Khata al-Bukhari fi Tarikhihi (Clarification of al-Bukhari's Errors in His History) is a specialized treatise on biographical critique (rijal) compiled by the hadith scholar Ibn Abi Hatim (240–327 AH / 854–938 CE) . The book collects critical emendations and corrections made by Abu Zur'ah al-Razi and Ibn Abi Hatim's father, Abu Hatim al-Razi, concerning biographical, genealogical, and orthographic details in the biographical work al-Tarikh al-Kabir by al-Bukhari .

Background and Composition

The genesis of the work traces back to Abu Zur'ah al-Razi, who was the first to compile notes pointing out errors in al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh . A manuscript of the history had been brought to al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas al-Sa'igh, who claimed to have transcribed it from al-Bukhari's original work . Abu Zur'ah surveyed this copy from beginning to end, highlighting passages he deemed erroneous alongside his proposed corrections and leaving blank spaces in certain entries .

Abu Hatim al-Razi subsequently reviewed the text, concurring with Abu Zur'ah on some points, dissenting on others, and supplying further emendations . Ibn Abi Hatim then compiled these observations into a standalone book under the same title used by Abu Zur'ah, systematically recording his father's agreements and disagreements with Abu Zur'ah's assessments .

Content and Methodology

The work focuses on identifying perceived inaccuracies in names, patronymics, lineages, and transmission relationships recorded in al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh as well as entries associated with Kitab al-Kuna . Typical entries state the reading found in al-Bukhari's manuscript followed by the correction proposed by the Razi scholars . These include orthographic corrections (tashif)—such as correcting al-Bukhari's entry of Ghurabi ibn Mu'awiya (spelled with a ghayn) to Urabi (with an ayn)—as well as rectifications of inverted lineages and misidentified transmission links .

Reception and Scholarly Assessment

The work drew significant attention and critical analysis from later hadith scholars:

  • Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi: After examining Ibn Abi Hatim's compilation, al-Khatib defended al-Bukhari, stating that many of the criticisms did not necessarily hold against him . He noted that several entries attributed to al-Bukhari as mistakes were recorded accurately in other transmissions of his Tarikh . Al-Khatib also expressed surprise that Ibn Abi Hatim drew heavily upon al-Bukhari's Tarikh when composing Kitab al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil—taking its biographical names and questioning his father and Abu Zur'ah about them—yet recorded these criticisms without offering an excuse or context on al-Bukhari's behalf .
  • Abd al-Rahman al-Mu'allimi: In his scholarly introduction, al-Mu'allimi observed that Abu Zur'ah and Abu Hatim had examined an early, unrevised copy of al-Tarikh al-Kabir, whereas al-Bukhari's later revisions and alternative manuscript transmissions had already rectified many of these points . Al-Mu'allimi emphasized the book's critical utility: entries in al-Tarikh left unchallenged by the Razi scholars carry implicit consensus on their correctness, while the challenged entries delineate points of scholarly disagreement for researchers to evaluate independently .

Publication

The work was edited with annotations by Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Mu'allimi al-Yamani and published by Da'irat al-Ma'arif al-Uthmaniyya in Hyderabad, Deccan (1378 AH / 1961 CE; also dated 1380 AH) .
