Barnamaj al-Tajibi (also vocalized as Barnamaj al-Tujibi) is a scholarly catalogue of transmissions (barnamaj / fahrasa) authored by the Ceutan Hadith scholar and traveler Abu al-Qasim al-Qasim ibn Yusuf al-Tujibi (d. 730 AH / 1330 CE) . The work documents the author's extensive network of teachers (shuyukh), their scholarly credentials, and the chains of transmission (asanid) through which he received works of Islamic religious and literary scholarship .
Context and Scope
Al-Tujibi compiled the work following his travels across North Africa and the Islamic East, where he studied under many leading scholars of his era . His travels occurred roughly ten years prior to those of his contemporary Ibn Rashid al-Fihri . In recording his scholarly acquisitions, al-Tujibi provided detailed biographical and bibliographical entries for his teachers, notably including prominent Eastern scholars such as Abd al-Mu'min al-Dimyati and Ibn Daqiq al-'Id . The catalogue serves as a detailed record of the Islamic texts, Hadith compilations, and treatises transmitted between the Maghrib and Mashriq in the late seventh and early eighth centuries AH .
Reception and Transmission
Later bibliographers and biographers praised al-Tujibi's meticulous documentation and vast scope. The historian Shams al-Din al-Sakhawi noted that he examined al-Tujibi's records of his Eastern masters and derived substantial benefit from them . The Moroccan traditionist Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani described the work as an expansive compilation rich in scholarly benefits, counting al-Tujibi among the singular figures of the Islamic West who traveled and recorded their transmissions with precision . Al-Kattani cited his own chain of transmission for the fahrasa tracing through Abu Zakariyya al-Sarraj from Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-Ru'ayni from al-Tujibi .
Publication
The text was edited by Abd al-Hafiz Mansur and published by al-Dar al-Arabiyyah lil-Kitab in Tunisia and Libya in 1981 .
