Bahjat Qulub al-Abrar wa Qurrat Uyun al-Akhyar fi Sharh Jawami‘ al-Akhbar (The Splendor of the Hearts of the Righteous and the Delight of the Eyes of the Upright in Explaining Comprehensive Narrations) is a work of hadith commentary by the Najdi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sadi (1307–1376 AH / 1889–1956 CE), expounding a selection of comprehensive Prophetic traditions across creed, jurisprudence, and ethics .
Purpose and Scope
In his introduction, al-Sadi states that following the word of God, no speech is more truthful, beneficial, or comprehensive for the good of this life and the hereafter than the words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was endowed with succinct, comprehensive speech ( جوامع الكلم ) . The author compiled a substantial selection of these narrations—encompassing universal principles, overarching categories, and specific chapters of religious knowledge—to elucidate their meanings, objectives, and legal and spiritual applications in a concise manner without undue elaboration .
Structure and Content
The book comprises ninety-nine comprehensive hadiths, each followed by an analytical commentary extracting doctrinal, legal, and moral principles:
- Foundations of Action and Sunnah: The collection opens with the narration on intentions ( إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ ), followed by the warning against religious innovations ( مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ ), which al-Sadi presents as the dual scales governing internal and external deeds, respectively .
- Worship and Devotion: Covers fundamental pillars and acts of devotion, such as the virtues and spiritual objectives of fasting, the primacy of obligatory acts over supererogatory devotions, and the traits of the righteous ( أولياء الله ) .
- Transactions and Ethics: Discusses rules governing commercial dealings, including honesty in buying and selling, the right of contractual withdrawal ( خيار المجلس ), and the prohibition of deceptive or uncertain sales ( بيع الغرر ) .
- Supplication and Admonitions: Concludes with comprehensive supplications, such as the Prophet's prayer for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency, alongside narrations describing moral perseverance and the conditions of later generations .
Method
Al-Sadi adopts an accessible explanatory method aimed at establishing universal legal maxims (qawa'id) and practical benefits from each text rather than engaging in technical isnad analysis . He frequently links the hadiths to relevant Quranic verses and incorporates legal reasoning drawn from the works of earlier scholars, including Ibn Taymiyyah .
Reception and Editions
The book has been widely studied and printed across several editions:
- Dar al-Rushd Edition: Edited by Abd al-Karim ibn Rasmi Al al-Durayni and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh (1st edition, 1422 AH / 2002 CE) .
- Other Editions: Printed by Maktabat al-Ma'arif in Riyadh (3rd edition, 1404 AH), the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta in Saudi Arabia (1405 AH), and Dar al-Mu'ayyad (1st edition, 1420 AH) .
