Ayyaman Madudat

Ayyaman Madudat (Arabic: أياما معدودات, lit. 'A Few Numbered Days') is an Islamic spiritual and devotional book by Magdi al-Hilali focused on drawing meaningful spiritual benefit from the month of Ramadan and sustaining uprightness throughout the year .

Background and Composition

The book was compiled after the publishing division of Mu'assasat Iqra' al-Jadidah requested a work on the month of Ramadan from al-Hilali . In response, he combined three of his previously published booklets into a single volume to offer readers a unified presentation on utilizing Ramadan for the revival of the heart and long-term steadfastness . These three constituent parts are:

  • Hatta La Nakhasara Ramadan ("So That We Do Not Lose Ramadan")
  • Madha Nuridu min Ramadan? ("What Do We Want from Ramadan?")
  • Ramadan wa-Awdat al-Ruh ("Ramadan and the Return of the Spirit")

Content and Themes

The central thesis of the work centers on distinguishing between religious "means" (wasa'il) and ultimate "goals" (ahdaf) . Al-Hilali argues that the fundamental purpose of human existence is true servitude (ubudiyyah) to God and the living faith of the heart . Various physical and devotional acts of worship—such as ritual prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and remembrance—act as prescribed remedies and vehicles to nurture this servitude and rectify character .

The book warns against engaging in Ramadan rituals mechanically without internal transformation, cautioning that purely superficial practice leaves an individual vulnerable to lethargy and apathy once the month concludes . It highlights practical ways to prepare spiritually and mentally for worship by eliminating worldly distractions , and encourages engaging with the Quran deeply and reflectively rather than merely focusing on the quantity of completed recitations .
