Awali Malik Riwayat al-Khatib (Elevated Narrations of Malik: Recension of al-Khatib) is a specialized hadith tract compiled by the historian and traditionist al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (392–463 AH / 1002–1071 CE), assembling narrations transmitted from Imam Malik ibn Anas through short, high chains of transmission (asānīd ‘āliyah) .
Transmission and Structure
The collection is preserved as a small tract (juz'), recorded in bibliographical literature including the Mu‘jam al-Mufahras of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Salah al-Din al-Ala'i's Itharat al-Fawa'id al-Majmu'ah . The text contains twenty-one narrations transmitted by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi to his disciples in the month of Safar 457 AH, notably Abu Muhammad Abd al-Karim ibn Hamzah ibn al-Khidr al-Sulami—who subsequently taught it in 522 AH—and Abu Muhammad Hibah Allah ibn Ahmad ibn al-Akfani .
The narrations trace through several primary chains of transmission gathered by al-Khatib:
- From Abu Umar Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Mahdi al-Farisi in Baghdad, from Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Isma'il al-Mahamili, from Ahmad ibn Isma'il al-Madani, from Malik .
- From Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Salt al-Ahwazi in Baghdad, from Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attar, from Ahmad ibn Isma'il Abu Hudhafah al-Sahmi, from Malik .
- From Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Qasim ibn al-Hasan al-Shahid in Basra, from Abu Rawq Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Bakr al-Hizzani, from Muhammad ibn al-Nu'man ibn Shibl, from Malik .
The tract covers various legal and ethical matters, opening with hadiths on military expeditions, the pledge of allegiance, and ritual purification, and concluding with a legal statement concerning the waiting period (‘iddah) of an irregular bleed (mustahāḍah) .
Manuscripts and Publication
The work is preserved in manuscript form in the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus . It was edited by Muhammad al-Hajj al-Nasir—with editorial assistance from Muhammad Awwam, Hasinah Majjati Ilmi, and Maryam Mawlawla—and published by Dar al-Gharb al-Islami in Beirut in 1998, as part of a collective volume bringing together seven distinct ‘awālī transmissions of Imam Malik's narrations .
