Awali Malik Riwayat Abi Ahmad al-Hakim is a hadith compilation by Abu Ahmad al-Hakim (d. 378 AH / 988 CE) that gathers narrations of Malik ibn Anas (d. 179 AH / 795 CE) transmitted through elevated chains of transmission (isnads with fewer intermediaries) .
Transmission and Structure
The collection was originally composed by Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Naysaburi, known as al-Hakim al-Kabir, across four parts (ajza'), bringing together elevated narrations traced back to Malik . It was read back to the author in 377 AH by Abu Ja'far al-'Azayimi, and transmitted on his authority by Abu Sa'd (also recorded as Abu Sa'id) Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Kanjarudhi in Rabi' al-Akhir 452 AH .
Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahhami (d. 533 AH) transmitted the work from al-Kanjarudhi and subsequently compiled a supplement (zawa'id) containing additional elevated narrations of Malik from his own audition records . Later scholars recorded chains of transmission linking back to Abu Ahmad al-Hakim's collection, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his bibliographical register al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras .
Modern Publication
The text was edited by Muhammad al-Hajj al-Nasir (with the assistance of Muhammad 'Awwam, al-Hasinah Mujati 'Ilmi, and Maryam Mawlawi) and published by Dar al-Gharb al-Islami in a collective volume containing various recensions of Malik's elevated narrations .
