Awali Juz Ibn al-Furat Intiqa al-Dhahabi (The Elevated Narrations Selected by al-Dhahabi from the Hadith Part of Ibn al-Furat) is a specialized hadith treatise containing elevated chains of transmission (awali) selected by the hadith master Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (d. 748 AH / 1348 CE) from the hadith collection (Juz') of Abu Mas'ud Ahmad ibn al-Furat (d. 258 AH / 872 CE) .

Transmission and Composition

The base collection belongs to the hadith scholar Abu Mas'ud Ahmad ibn al-Furat al-Razi . Al-Dhahabi received the collection through a chain of transmission descending from Ibn al-Furat through Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Ja'far ibn Faris, who transmitted it in 344 AH to the hadith master Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani (d. 427 AH) . It was subsequently transmitted through Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Haddad (in 515 AH), Abu al-Faraj Yahya ibn Mahmud al-Thaqafi (in 583 AH in Damascus), and Zayn al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abd al-Da'im al-Maqdisi .

Al-Dhahabi heard the work directly from four disciples of Ibn Abd al-Da'im: Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Da'im al-Maqdisi, Abu Umar Uthman ibn Salim al-Badhdhi, Amat al-Aziz Zaynab bint Isma'il ibn al-Khabbaz, and Fatimah bint Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisiyyah . The hadith scholar al-Birzali transcribed this selection directly from al-Dhahabi's autograph copy, and a manuscript of the work was transcribed from al-Birzali's copy by Ahmad ibn Sa'id al-Siwasi in Damascus in 742 AH .

Contents

The selection consists of twenty-three narrations encompassing prophetic traditions and reports from the Companions and Successors . The topics covered in the tract include warnings against lying about the Prophet ﷺ, entering the presence of political authorities, medicine and treatment (such as the use of honey, the Quran, Indian costus, and water for reducing fever), ethical supplications, and interpersonal conduct .

Publication

The work was edited by Abu Ammar Abd Allah ibn Dayf Allah al-Shamrani and published by Dar al-Rayyan in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, in 1413 AH / 1992 CE . It was published in a single volume alongside another selection from the same original source made by al-Ala'i (d. 761 AH), titled Ahadith Muntaqah min Juz Ibn al-Furat .
