Awali al-Layth ibn Saad (The Elevated Narrations of al-Layth ibn Saad) is a hadith compilation of elevated-chain narrations (ʿawālī) transmitted on the authority of the Egyptian jurist and hadith scholar al-Layth ibn Saad (94–175 AH / 713–791 CE), extracted and compiled by the Hanafi traditionist Ibn Qutlubugha (802–879 AH / 1399–1474 CE).
Background and Composition
Ibn Qutlubugha compiled the work after gathering the narrations of the Companion Uqba ibn Amir al-Juhani. In his introduction, he stated that upon completing the collection of Uqba's narrations, he wished to compile elevated transmissions belonging to other prominent scholars associated with the cemetery of al-Qarafa in Egypt, selecting al-Layth ibn Saad as one of them.
Content and Transmission
The book contains hadiths related through short, elevated chains of transmission leading back to al-Layth ibn Saad, who transmits them from teachers such as Nafi and Abu al-Zubayr from Companions including Abdullah ibn Umar and Jabir ibn Abdillah. The compiler's isnads to al-Layth pass through multiple intermediaries, including routes through Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Sarraj from Qutayba ibn Said, and paths transmitted through Abu al-Jahm al-Ala ibn Musa al-Bahili.
The surviving text is preserved in the recension (riwāya) of Badr al-Din Hasan ibn al-Tuluni.
Reception and Editions
The collection is documented in classical bibliographical works such as Kashf al-zunun by Hajji Khalifa and al-Risala al-mustatrafa by Muhammad ibn Jafar al-Kattani, which list it among Ibn Qutlubugha's specialized compilations of elevated narrations alongside his ʿAwālī of Qadi Bakkar and his ʿAwālī of al-Tahawi.
The work was edited by Abd al-Karim Bakr al-Mawsili al-Nu'aymi and published in Jeddah in 1408 AH (1987 CE).
