Awali al-Harith (Awālī al-Ḥārith) is a hadith tract (juzʾ) of narrations with elevated transmission chains (ʿawālī) extracted from the Musnad of the Baghdadi hadith scholar al-Harith ibn Abi Usama (d. 282 AH / 895 CE) .
Subject and Content
The collection, also designated as ʿAwālī Musnad al-Ḥārith or Juzʾ fīhi aḥādīth ʿawālī mustakhraja min Musnad al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāma, gathers narrations transmitted through short chains of transmission (isnād) from al-Harith's larger Musnad . Among its contents are elevated transmissions preserved on the authority of companions such as Usama ibn Zayd .
Transmission and Reception
The text was transmitted from al-Harith by Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Yusuf ibn Khallad and subsequently passed down through the recension (riwāya) of Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani . The transmission continued through scholars including Abu Ali al-Haddad and al-Najib Abd al-Latif al-Harrani down to Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, who recorded his chain of transmission for the work in his al-Muʿjam al-Mufahras .
In Damascus, the historian and traditionist Alam al-Din al-Birzali read Awali al-Harith in 706 AH with Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Zahiri, who had heard it in his infancy from the hadith scholar Yusuf ibn Khalil .
Manuscripts and Publication
A manuscript copy of the tract, consisting of three folios along with its audition records (samāʿāt), is preserved in the Marwaziyya Library under accession number 10663 F within a collective codex (majmūʿ) . The work was edited by Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Hulayyil and published in Riyadh in 1411 AH / 1990 CE .
